A Boy Called Ralph
£4.50
Commissioned by Northern Architecture as part of their their ongoing Byker Lives Project, in association with Igloo Regeneration Fund, Newcastle-based multimedia design company Roots and Wings present their new children's book, A Boy Called Ralph.
Written and illustrated by Jake Conrad and Ed Blazey, Ralph is a playful and effervescent re-imagining of the building of the Byker Wall by notable architect Ralph Erskine. As anyone familiar with the history of the area will know, the Byker Wall has been a colourful but occasionally divisive stitch in Newcastle's architectural tapestry. It has been described as both “groundbreaking...influential across Europe” and “a ghetto for many of those failed by society.” Whatever has been said about the Byker Wall over the years, it is nothing if not iconic.
Beautifully illustrated in pen and watercolour, A Boy Called Ralph is a homage to this fascinating structure and the man who dared to build it. A large number of copies will be given to families with young children living in the Byker Wall and copies are also available to buy online, with all proceeds going towards further community projects in the Byker Area.
